They are nice to have, if you are in business.

I have quite a bit of successful experience at SEO (search engine optimization), so I began doing that. I had already used meta tags and other standard on-page SEO methods. So it was time to start the off-page methods.

Step one was to submit 399Retouch.com to the Big 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo! and MSN). This is quick and easy, except when Yahoo! claims that no reply was received from your site. Sometimes you have to punch it in 10 times to get Yahoo! to agree that your site exists.

Step two was to set up a Google site map. This is pretty simple, and supposedly it speeds your way into the database of Big G. There is a special file you need to create on the web site for sitemaps to be happy, so I did that.

Then I began posting the site to some website directories. At any given time there are several new directories that need listings, and they are happy for a webmaster to submit a site. Later on, as those directories mature, they have less need for brand-new site listings like 399Retouch, so you need to find them when they are just getting started.

A couple of more SEO tricks and I was done. Now the wait for 399Retouch to start appearing in the search engine results pages...

How 399Retouch.com Got Started

In early 2006 I came across a website showing examples of pictures of people, before and after they were Photoshopped. The results were incredible! Overweight, flat-chested brunettes became slim, large-busted blondes! Wrinkled faces became young again. Acned teen-agers developed flawless complexions. Two photos, each showing one person, became one photo of two people next to each other. Unwanted persons disappeared from pictures. Old, torn photographs became whole again. I thought, "Wow, this is cool!"

I'm not that good with Photoshop, but I met someone who was. She had years of professional experience and a regular job, and was looking for some extra income. We came to an agreement on how to work together and http://399Retouch.com was born.

Of course, there was the little issue of getting customers...
